This article puts intimate partner homicide (IPH) into a process perspective, and describes the situational precursors that constitute build-up, is, first stage of IPH precedes deed. Fifty court files, from cases involving 40 male ten female perpetrators, underwent thematic analysis. Our findings indicate build-up phase an is complex encompasses several different features, which some are clearly gendered. The results point to escalation during build-up: possessiveness violent behaviour in male-to-female cases, alcohol/drug abuse, mental health problems and/or fears for future, often connected separation. Concurrent with previous research we found women kill context their own victimisation.
